Guess what I signed up for? A farm-share program!!! I’m so excited about this! 😀 A farm-share program is similar to a CSA (community supported agriculture). Each week, we will get a fresh box of produce that is organic and grown right here in California. How cool is that?!
I had always wanted to sign up for one of these, but hesitated because I was worried I wouldn’t get all the produce eaten before it spoiled. Then a blog reader and high school classmate told me about how much she loved hers and I decided it was time to give it a try. There are so many benefits to this:
- Fresh organic produce that is grown locally and CHEAPER than organic produce from the grocery store.
- Forced healthier eating – if I have a box full of delicious produce to eat, then I can’t eat out and will consequently be eating healthier.
- Trying new things – some of the fruits and veggies that come in the box are certainly not found in your average grocery store.
I signed up with Abundant Harvest Organics, but there are many more of these programs out there. Here is just a sampling of what was included in this week’s box of goodies. (I get my first box next week.)
- Pears
- Persimmons (I’ve never eaten a persimmon in my life!)
- Beats
- Broccoli
- Carrots
- Green Beans
- Lettuce
- Onions
- Radishes
- Winter squash
- Cabbage
Are you kidding me with this list?! And that’s just the small box! If you get the larger box, which feeds 3-4 people, there is even more! They also include recipes to help you use up all your produce. (Umm, yeah, I’m definitely going to need a recipe for those persimmons. ;-)) Plus (yes, there’s more!), they have “add-ons” that you can get for an additional fee, including eggs, spices and popcorn where the kernels are still on the ear! 😯 This is blowing my mind!
Apparently, these are persimmons. Not at all what I had pictured they would look like. See, trying new things! 🙂
In other, way less exciting news, our heat is out and we have some sort of water leak coming from somewhere that we can’t figure out. D’oh! 😯 Why does it always seem that everything falls apart at once! Repair people coming on Wednesday, so we shall see just exactly how bad it turns out to be.

What’s the most unusual fruit or veggie you’ve ever tried?
Great choice! I don’t think you will regret it! I am a little jealous. You seem to get more unusual stuff than we do here in Iowa! Go figure! I am looking forward to your new recipes! 🙂
You’ll have to let us know how it goes with the persimmons. I did try then once and wasn’t impressed, but maybe you will like them. I recently talked to a young couple who own Grinnell Heritage Farms and have a CSA with delivery in Des Moines. Tried to interest other people at work but no takers sp far.
Do they have small baskets for like 2 people? I bet you could use that in a week between you, dad, and Erin. Of course, that might require you to actually cook. 😉
