Grandpas Are The Best

20 Feb

The hubby’s dad (aka my father-in-law) is here visiting this week. Cy and Sadie have quickly figured out that grandpas are the best. They take you on walks, play with you, and even give you beer. Yes, I said give you beer. Let’s just say, I think Cy is an alcoholic. 😉

Today, we took time out from playing and beer drinking to visit the Huntington Library and Botanical Gardens near Pasadena.

Huntington Entrance

You can find out more about the history of the Huntington here, but in summary, it is the estate of an old rich guy. 🙂 On the estate is the old rich guy’s mansion, plus 120 acres of gardens. There are several different types of gardens, including Desert, Australian, Japanese, Rose and Chinese.

Hubby and me in the "shelter thingy" in the Chinese garden. "Shelter thingy" is a technical term.

Pathway in the Chinese garden.

Me outside of the Japanese Garden, which unfortunately was closed for renovations.

"Cow's Horn" cactus in the desert garden. Ouch!

The trunk of the "butt crack tree" as hubby called it, in the desert garden.

Now after a fun day, I am SOOOO dreading going back to work tomorrow. Mama needs more vacation time! 😥

Happy VD

14 Feb

When I was in college, I earned my beer tuition money by working at a grocery store. While there, I had a brief stint helping out in the floral shop during Valentine’s Day. When we would write-up customers’ orders, we would abbreviate “Happy Valentine’s Day” with “Happy VD.” Then my boss started calling it “Happy Venereal Disease Day.” For some reason, this memory always pops into my head on Valentine’s Day. 🙂

I got some Valentine’s flowers from my sweetie at work today. 😀

(Please excuse the mess of papers on my desk in the background. I have a bit of a hoarding problem.) Hopefully my lilies will be open when I get to work tomorrow.

Cy had a fun V-Day at daycare today. Check out these valentines they sent home with him. So cute!

(Sorry about my tragic looking nail polish. I put this super sparkly nail polish on and now it is a total bitch to get off!)

Sadie, on the other hand, is her own valentine. She’s single and loving it. 😉 Or maybe food is her valentine. She does seem to have a long-standing love affair with food. Here she is giving me her best “I’m super cute and sweet, don’t you want to give me some food?” look.

How are you celebrating VD?
Valentine’s Day, that is. 😉 As for me, I have a date with this little book I ordered on Amazon that came in the mail today.

Oregon vacay, here I come!

12 Feb

I feel like I was super accomplished this weekend. Yesterday, I started the day by doing some work outside, cleaning up our patio.

Cy helped me. 😉

Later in the day, we look the kids to the park. We all had a lot of fun at the park. We went to a park that we’ve been to before, but haven’t been to in a while, so it was something new for the kids, plus it has nice walking trails for mom and dad. Sadie seemed really excited to be there – more so than she is at some other parks. We started calling her “Fun Sadie” because she almost seemed giddy there. She was running and playing like when she was a young pup. To be honest, sometimes she is miserable to take to the park because she would rather stand in one spot and eat rabbit turds all day than go on a walk, but this time she had a little more pep in her step. 🙂 Cy had fun too because we let him off leash when there was no one around. He was running around like a mad man and had a total blast.

It’s too bad Sadie can’t go off leash also, but her recall (aka listening) skills are not the best. Cy, on the other hand, comes when called, even with distractions. This is mostly our fault for not giving Sadie as much training as we have given Cy, but the girl does have an extremely stubborn streak that seems to be inherent and nothing to do with training.

We went back to the same park again today and Cy had fun chasing a tennis ball and Sadie had fun stealing and hiding the ball from her brother. 😉

Yesterday, I also did step one for my DIY art project for our dining room.

Yes, I know it is “safety cone orange” and that’s just how I like it! 😉 This place needs a pop of color!

The hubby and I just got back from an early Valentine’s dinner at Cucina Enoteca. Love that place! And love my sweetie. 😀

A Dog’s Life

31 Jan

Like a lot of women, I tend to carry my stress in my neck and shoulders. Whenever I’m stressed, my neck and shoulders tighten up. Sometimes it happens before I can even recognize that I’m stressed. Today was one of those days, so as I sit here with a heating pad on my neck, I’m thinking I need a dog’s life.

This, ladies and gentleman, is how my furry kids spend their days:

Snuggling with friends

Going for walks

Playing with friends

Taking a snooze

Sharing with friends

And did I mention playing with friends?

But, alas, I’m a human and not a dog, so maybe I will de-stress by planning my spring vacation. We’re thinking maybe Oregon this year. Beer and nature, here I come! 😉

Snapshots From The Weekend

29 Jan

Hey y’all! How was your weekend?

Here are some snapshots from my weekend.

Yesterday, I did yoga for the first time since my surgery. I was a little wobbly on some of the moves, but overall it felt GREAT to be exercising again. My muscles thanked me. 🙂

It was a beautiful weekend here, so we took the kids to the park yesterday and today. We had some wicked Santa Ana winds on Friday (I’m talking shaking the whole house windy), but the one positive of Santa Ana winds is that they blow out all the clouds, so that means it’s super sunny.

I went to Micheal’s today to get some supplies for a little DIY art project for our dining room. I was inspired by this photo from Make Under My Life.

I’m going to do my prints in a bright orange though because I really need a pop of color in here. The inspiration photo also has felt flowers on it, but I’m going to do a stencil instead.

I’m going to recreate this circle print from the lamp onto my canvas.

Now I’m off to watch The Help.

Peace out!

A Classic Fail

19 Jan

It was a rough night in the Cabs and Dogs household last night. The younger furry kid woke up several times during the night with barfing and, umm, you know, that other thing that often comes with barfing. 😯

Just like a kid daycare, doggie daycare doesn’t take sick kids, so luckily I was able to work from home today so I could be here with him in case there were any more “incidents.” There were, in fact, a few “incidents” and there was also a lot of this:

For dinner tonight, I made Iowa Girl Eats’ Superfood Salad and, as luck would have it, someone suddenly felt a lot better when I was trying to make dinner. Just like a kid, he wanted to play, he wanted to eat and he wanted to go to the bathroom. 🙄

This salad was really good. It was also a lot of work. In fact, it totally violated my rule of chopping no more than three veggies per recipe. 😉 I doubled the recipe too because I wanted to have leftovers for lunches, so that meant double the work. I also made a classic cooking fail – I totally underestimated the size of bowl I would need.

I got about half way through the recipe and my bowl was totally heaping full and I couldn’t really stir it. D’oh! 😳 So then I had to bring out the big guns:

A bowl normally reserved for making stuffing on Thanksgiving had to be busted out on a random Thursday night.

It fits!

That’s much better!

Then it was time to get my eat on because I was seriously tired after making this.

What’s more important to you when cooking – convenience or deliciousness? I would say I fall somewhere in the middle on this one. I’m definitely not willing to work too hard for a weeknight meal, but if it’s a special meal or on a weekend, then I’m willing to get down and dirty for yummy food.

*Note: I did make a few modifications the original recipe: I did not use corn and I used maple syrup in the dressing instead of sugar.

My Life Is A Commercial

10 Jan

So I mentioned in my last post that I maybe, sorta, kinda want to try for a baby this year. Well last night, when hubby and I were watching the BCS National Championship Bowl Game, we saw this commercial:

Then hubby says, “That commercial spoke to me.”

“Oh really, so you want to build a fighting robot?” I say.

“Actually I do,” he says. 😛

Yeah, I don’t know what happened to me, but suddenly when I look at a baby, I no longer see a screaming poop machine. Instead, I think aww, I want one! After nearly seven years of marriage, I think some, including me, may have thought that this feeling would never strike me, but somehow, someway it has. 😀

Speaking of kids, one of my furry kids did the craziest thing tonight. I’ve always known that my Cy guy is a seriously strong chewer, as in he can’t have any stuffed toys because he tears them apart in 2.2 seconds. Well tonight he proved just what a strong jaw he has. I was making dinner and he was laying on his bed chewing on a bone… or so I thought. I turned around to see this:

HE SPLIT THE BONE IN HALF!!! This is a real bone and he split it in half! I immediately checked for missing teeth, but luckily they were all there. This kid never ceases to amaze me with his antics! 😉

Alright, so is anyone else on the baby bandwagon with me? Did it hit you all of a sudden?
